Is there a reason why when I removed a (closet) light switch, 1/2 the outlets in the room don’t work?
I removed a lightswitch from my closet that there is no need for and now many of the outlets in my room don’t work. I just have the two hot and one ground wires capped seperately within the box. What do I need to do to get my outlets to work without installing another light switch???
Shut down the breaker. take the caps off the wires and splice the hot side and return back together without the switch. If you don’t know how to do that, do a yahoo image search for “light circuit with an outlet” and you should get a picture.
Someone probably tapped into that outlet circuit to install that light. By capping the wires, you broke the circuit. Wiring them together will bring the outlets back. Be careful, the switch was probably “pigtailed” (again, a yahoo search should find you a picture if you don’t know what that means).
Also – put a “blank” plate cover over the old switch box. You just created a “hot” gang box inside the wall, and code will dictate that you CANNOT dry wall over a “hot” splice in a circuit.
