The carbon atoms at the diamond surface unsaturated?
In a fit of generosity, I bought four sets of Parts organic chemistry model (molymod), convinced that I had to overcome the only thing that prevented me from modeling structures of diamond and graphite for Children "class my terse local society – namely, not enough to hole-four carbon atoms. Unfortunately, my ignorance seems to be a barrier, too! After four hours I am proud of my diamond filled model presented to my daughter, who said: "Uh, Mom, should not an octahedron? "It is an octahedron!" I protested, until I counted the sides. No, I succeeded to construct a tetrahedron. I had to start over (daughter hands are not strong enough to snap the pieces together, or I would do). I now have an octahedron … but I do not want to show my children for fear they will ask: "Why all the carbon atoms outside of the diamond is still a hole left over? "Because I do not know. Then these surface atoms double bond, or linked to junk on the surface, or?
Search the Internet, I found something on the diamond like carbon substances and how they are produced by randomization of sp3 hybrids and SP2, this randomization keeps the carbon cube "Jumping" back to sp2 it original configuration. So in these diamonds as its substance in the package of space that holds some of the cubic form. Sp3 = sp2 orbitals training cubic = Hex So basically, SP2 takes the place held in the Service Pack 3 carbon atoms in a diamond shape that can be applied to show that outside the most coals are in the SP2 configuration lock in Service Pack 3 carbon atoms in exactly how you can model, I do not know – this is only my guess though, but it is logical
