A pocket knife: the first step to maturity
Life is a parade of firsts. From the moment we are born, until the day we die, we experience a plethora of new features. From the first time we ride, sit for the first time to take our first step, the experience of our first crush, until reaching the plateau of our latest life, we are still experiencing the thrill of something new. And not only these channels early exciting for us, but also those around us. Well we do not understand at the time that our parents are just as excited as us, we quickly learn that, with our own children.
I remember I first got my first pocket knife in my hand, knowing it was mine. I was only nine years old at the time, but I knew even if I could not express in words, I had been given, and not just a small piece of metal and plastic, but a handle responsibility. That was how Dad told me that I had gained some maturity in my young life. It was a subtle way tell me that I had reached a level of my life when he could trust me with something. It was not just another toy show my friends. This was not just another piece of my childhood, which would be discarded as I have reached higher levels of maturity. This was the beginning of my adulthood. It was a "toy" that could be potentially dangerous. Not only for me but to others around me. Dad told me I was ready for something that was not only for entertainment, but something that required a level of responsibility I had never treated before. I was excited, but I'm sure nothing compared to the excitement of my father.
I always this knife today, thirty years later. It is a little two-bladed black knife case. It has been sharpened as time in years there is not much to it, but it is still a great power the responsibility we all must one day as a cloak over his shoulders. I'll never forget the excitement I felt that day. Little matter how long I live, or how many jobs I want, or how I take responsibility over the years, nothing will embolden me or thrills as if I was the first time I held my very own pocket knife.
