how do you finish marble to use as a kitchen island surface?
I have several pieces of marble that were used as a bank teller counter, and now I am wanting to use them as the top to a kitchen island that would be used for food prepartion and as an eating surface.
The marble is polished and not porous. I don’t know if it is cultured marble, & I don’t know how to tell. It is approximately 50 years old. Will this be a safe surface to use for food preparation? Thanks for your help!
If it is 50 years old and used in a bank, it probably isn’t cultured marble. In fact it may be granite. In any case I don’t see why it can’t be used as you wish. I would probably give it a good scrubbing and a healthy application of diluted bleach to be on the safe side.
If there is a local dealer in natural stone counter tops, you might want to vist them and look at samples of granite and marble so you can see the difference. With marble you will probably need to keep the surface sealed but it it is granite then that really isn’t a problem. Granite is much densier and harder than marble and very difficult to damage with reason care.
