Are doorknobs with keypads safe?
Are the exterior doorknobs sold with keypads as secure as deadbolts? Is there a brand anyone can recommend?
The security of a deadbolt comes from the fact that the bolt must be intentionally retracted to close the door while a latch has an angled surface that allows the closing of a door against a door jamb to retract the latch so the door can be closed without retracting the latch manually which also means that the latch can be pried open often with a credit card. If a doorknob set with a keypad has a bolt that is flat at the end like that of a dead bolt then it has a similar fundamental level of security as a deadbolt. After that it’s a matter of how strong it is to attack, ie.: how many blows it can take before falling apart etc. Look at the ANSI security rating of the device, grade 1 is best, grade 3 is the minimum acceptable for a residence.
Note that there is a concept called a dead latch where there’s a plunger behind the latch, usually a half circular plunger, while this plunger is depressed more than the latch is, the latch cannot be retracted. As this plunger is never intended to enter the door strike, it prevents the “credit card” attack that latches are subject to.
One of the consequences of a keyless entry set with a keypad is that someone could just keep trying codes till the lock opens. Look for features such as a ten minute lockout after three unsuccessful unlock attempts, of course such features are only on the electronic keypad locks.
