An external skeleton as that of a crab gives protection to the animal, but as the creature grows, it becomes trapped inside the skeleton. The crab (or other) must pay the skeleton and then developed rapidly before the hardening of the new skeleton. Meanwhile, it is very vulnerable to attacks. An internal skeleton is clearly not "shielded" from protection, but allows greater flexibility. And it can grow steadily, if necessary throughout the life of the animal.
