Inflator Dial

Tire gauge — Digital vs Analog?

I’ve used a digital tire gauge for the longest time, until I recently bought a new tire inflator for an air compressor that has a dial indicator on it. The tire analog inflator gauge reads 4 psi higher when the digital reads right at the desired psi. This is whole other can of worms to which there is much disagreement on, especially if you are a Walmart tire tech (to them it doesn’t matter what kind of tire u buy from them, they will only put in 35 psi, even if the tire has a max COLD psi of 80 psi). But I run all my tires on all my vehicles at the maximum COLD TIRE PRESSURE that is stated on the sidewall of the tires. Only because I carry a lot of passengers and equipment in all of my vehicles and I want a rigid tire. So 4 psi too much or too little makes a significant difference in my household. Which one should I go with Digital or Analog.

That’s a bad idea. You need to run the tires at the psi stated for your car. It’s based on weight not the tires itself. Over-inflating will get you better gas mileage but is potentially dangerous if the roads you’re on have a lot of turns, twists, etc; also it increases the chance of tire blowout.

4psi is way too much variance in wheel pressure. Max you want is 2psi either way and even then that’s generally only for performance vehicles that have the brakes to prevent possible collisions.

Mechanical gauges tend to be more accurate than digital gauges; but it depends (as always) on the quality of the gauge itself. The CH (Campbell Hausfeld?) stuff at walmart is pretty good…I’m sure the slime gauges are equal if not better than those.
