Birmingham Hip Resurfacing

Hip resurfacing is ideal for many young, active patients who suffer from pain hip. Many people remain physically active later in their late fifties and beyond so there is a greater need for an alternative to the prosthesis Total hip accommodates their age and lifestyle.

What is the BIRMINGHAM HIP * Resurfacing Device?

Your hip is a ball and socket where the thighbone and pelvis meet. As you move the leg, the ball of your femur (called moves the femoral head) and turns on the party taking your pelvic bone (called the acetabulum). If your hip joint is sick because of certain types of arthritis, or previous damage, it will become less functional and more painful over time. When your hip pain increases to the point that it can not be helped by traditional measures such as pain medicine and exercise (physiotherapy) and your ability to move your hip decreases, an effect your ability to do your daily activities, it may be necessary to replace the hip surgery.
BIRMINGHAM HIP ™ Resurfacing (BHR ™) device has two components: a cup-shaped socket (Shallow acetabular component), and a hat in the form of a spherical head (Resurfacing femoral component). See Figure 1.
The cup replaces the damaged surface of your hip (acetabulum). The cap covers the bone-shaped ball your upper thigh (femoral head), and the cap has a small stem that is inserted into the top of your femur. The movements of the CAP in the cup. The surfaces that rub against each other (the pair of gear) are made of highly polished metal. This type of torque is known as a metal covering on two bearings metal.

Hip resurfacing versus a total hip replacement:

With a resurfacing device hip, the surgeon covers your hip with a metal cup, and covers the femoral head with a metal cap. (See Figure 1) The NER system is a device resurfacing of the hip. With a device for total hip replacement, the surgeon covers your hip with a cup and replaces the femoral head with a metal ball attached to a long metal rod. The metal rod is inserted into the femur. (See Figure 2)

BIRMINGHAM HIP * Resurfacing Surgery System

BIRMINGHAM hip resurfacing surgery system has helped more patients hip pain in the world than any other hip resurfacing surgery available. Their experience – and yours – can be broken down into three main parts.

* Before surgery – Prepare
* Day of surgery – What to Expect
* After Surgery – Smart Recovery Strategies

Preoperatively – Prepare

BIRMINGHAM HIP * Resurfacing System begins with an appointment with your orthopedic surgeon.
The first surgical consultation may include X-rays, medical history and physical, and a list of your medications and allergies. Your surgeon can examine the system for hip resurfacing BIRMINGHAM procedure and answer all your questions about hip pain, hip resurfacing or any other pre-operative questions.

Your doctor may ask you to meet with a physical therapist (PT), even before surgery. PT can give you some tips on preparing your home for rehabilitation, and how you should sleep, get out of bed, sit, stand, and walk after surgery. Some things you can do before surgery to prepare for the rehabilitation period are:

  • Add extra cushions to couches and chairs. The extra height, it will be easier for you to raise and lower the chair.
  • Have chairs available. During rehabilitation, you may be told to sit in the chairs, because you will need the arms to help you sit and recover.
  • Arrange to have an elevated toilet seat and / or grab bars installed in your bathroom.
  • Move items you might need to reach the shelves or tables above waist level.
  • Remove all throw rugs and nothing else on the floor that could make you slip or trip and fall.

OFSURGERY DAY – What to Expect

After being admitted, you will be taken in the appropriate pre-operative where the nurses will take your vital signs, start intravenous (IV) fluids and administer medications as needed. You will be asked to empty your bladder just before surgery, and remove contacts all jewelry, etc. Once you change into surgical gowns you will be brought to the operating room. The anesthesiologist will meet and review drugs and procedures used during surgery.
Your surgeon will begin the operation with a technical approach to the joint hip. There are several surgical approaches available, and the surgeon to choose the approach that best suits their experience. There are differences subtle differences in each approach that will result in slight variations in the diets used in post-operative recovery and rehabilitation of surgery.

The surgeon then prepares the bones for the resurfacing, using specialized instruments provided by Smith & Nephew manufacturer BIRMINGHAM HIP * Resurfacing System implants. The head of the femur is prepared to receive the resurfacing component and the socket is shaped to accept the new cut resurfacing. Once this is completed the plug is inserted in a position to provide stability of the hip and allow bone to grow around it. This encourages long-term security of the hip joint newly refurbished. Finally, head resurfacing component is fixed into position using bone cement.
After a thorough inspection of all components of your surgeon, then close the approach path with surgical sutures. It is common for the surgeon to leave a drainage tube output just below the incision for a couple BIRMINGHAM days after surgery of the hip resurfacing system, but in some cases, it is not necessary.

AFTER SURGERY – STRATEGIES Smart Recovery

Most patients are hospitalized for 4-6 days. The operation usually lasts February to April hours to complete. You'll use the walking support (canes, crutches) for about six weeks after surgery, while hip muscles are healing. You may be told not to bend the hip or waist to more than one angle of 90 degrees during the healing time (Rehabilitation).
Before returning at home, your physical therapist (PT) will teach you to climb the stairs and how to move from a bed, a chair, and car. Your PT can also give you a list of exercises to do at home every day. These exercises will help you to become as independent as possible in your personal care and daily activities after your return. Physical therapy will also help you prepare for more difficult exercises, movement and activity.

The weeks after hip surgery

Most of your treatment and recovery (rehabilitation) will take place once you have checked the hospital. Your PT will design an exercise program to increase movement and strength of the hip, and learn the exercises, making sure you know the correct way to the
exercises before beginning. The success of your rehabilitation is highly dependent on how you spent on the program of physiotherapy.

Walking is the key to a quick return to your active lifestyle. But do not overdo it. Swimming is good, but you should not try other sports, including golf, until authorized by your surgeon. Talk to your doctor about scheduling a year regular stretching program.

Precautions after BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System surgery
The six to 12 months after surgery to hip resurfacing BIRMINGHAM system are the most vulnerable of the new hip joint. Want try your new hip resurfacing. But you also want to be smart, and it is slowly.
Avoid lifting heavy and high-impact activities such as jogging or jumping. Do not bend or squat. Driving can take around four to five weeks after hip resurfacing surgery, pending approval doctors, like sex – but try to avoid extreme movements of the hip for about three months.

Some pain is normal and expected during your period of rehabilitation, and pain should decrease slowly over the weeks following the surgery. If you encounter serious mmediate, hip pain or pressure or a constant feeling of instability, or if you are suddenly unable to put weight on the hip after the onset of pain Postoperative left, you should contact your doctor. These signs (symptoms) be a signal of a serious problem (such as broken bones, dislocations, infection, loosening, device movement, or breakage). All these problems may require medical care including more surgery. Remember listen to what your body tells you and what your doctor recommends. If you start having pain or swelling, contact your doctor for advice.

Follow your doctor exam schedule after surgery. routine examinations include regular x-rays to look for problems such as the hip bone or breaking device, the position changes, or something unusual. X-rays will also check the status progress of bone healing around the implant.

Your new hip device may trigger metal detector alarms. Tell Worker safety of your artificial hip when passing through security checks at airports, stores and public buildings.

Specific potential benefits of the BIRMINGHAM HIP * Resurfacing System include:

  • The metal cup OHR will not chip or cracks on pottery can.
  • The OHR does not cause the femur (femoral diaphysis) Total hip fractures systems can.
  • The OHR may make future revision surgery easier because hip resurfacing surgery leaves your femoral head in place and there is no metal big rod placed in the femur.
  • Revision surgery of total hip replacement where the femoral head has been removed and a rod wide is already in place can be a more difficult operation.
  • Dislocation of the head from the outlet is less common with the device BHR devices with total hip replacement. In the clinical study, 0.3% of patients experienced dislocation BHR, compared with between 1% and 4.2% of total hip replacement patients from comparison studies.

Some of the potential risks of the * BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System

The potential risks of a hip joint replacement include:

  • Damage to blood vessels, or temporary or permanent damage of the nerve during surgery,
  • sudden drop in blood pressure during surgery because of the use of
    bone cement
  • circulatory problems due to surgery and in recovery, including the formation of blood clots in the legs or lungs or a heart attack.
  • Allergic reactions to peripheral equipment or medications you are given
  • Surgical wounds that take a long time to heal due to many reasons such as poor skin status, infection, poor circulation, poor hygiene, etc.
  • Infection associated with surgery and wound healing. Infections may occur months to years after surgery and these infections are difficult to treat and may require reoperation with removal and replacement later at another time.
  • Dislocation of hip, loosening the device or move, or carry device / breakage caused by a lack of muscle and fibrous tissue firmness (release). location of devices in the wrong position in the bone, poor decision device bone, too much weight or activity placed on the device, or accidents affecting the hip joint such as falls (injury)
  • Damage to the bone and tissue (tissue necrosis), near the hip joint, including loss of bone around (osteolysis) or the color of the liquid from the hip (metallosis) due to wear of metal parts over time.
  • Change in leg length in which the device is placed,
  • Device failure due to the weakening of the metal over time (stress fracture)
  • fracture of bones due to osteoporosis or accidents (trauma)
  • The bone loss or bone formation around the implants too reply surgery or the presence of the device into the bone.
These potential adverse effects may require medical treatment or additional surgery. It is rare fatal complications.

The potential risks of the device relative to a replacement system OHR total hip:

  • The risk of scratching of the femoral neck (cut) during surgery can lead to fracture of the femoral neck after surgery. This occurred in less than 1% of patients in the clinical study OHR.
  • The risk of collapse of the femoral head. This occurred less than 1% of patients in the clinical study OHR.
  • The risk of collapse of the femoral head. This occurred in less 1% of patients in the clinical study OHR.
  • The risk of avascular necrosis. This occurred in 1% of patients in the study OHR clinic.
  • If the party hat BHR device must be removed (Revised), your surgeon will likely be a total replacement of metal hip stem in your femur (see Figure 2).

These complications may require surgery to change the device BHR to a device for total hip replacement. You should compare these risks to potential benefits of a system of BHR, as described above.

That Clinical studies reveal that?
A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy the BHR device. Complication (security) were collected from the entire study group of 2385 hips. Efficiency Information were collected from the first of 1626 2385 1626 hips because these hips have the longest follow-up. There are 5 year follow-up information for 546 of the 1626 hips.

Data Security
The overall complication rates and types of complications in the study group were generally OHR Similar complications reported for other systems of hip replacement. Complications led to surgical revision in 27 hips of 2385. The revision rate of 1.13% to 5-years after surgery, all complications was comparable to rates reported for the total revision of replacement devices hip. No deaths were directly related to the use of the device under study. All deaths were other medical problems.
