i would like to surf but live in NY… Im planning on going to college in CA. i need tips…?
Im going into my junior year of high school and ive always wanted to surf, i grew up in Southern California watching people surf in huntington beach and it just seemed like something i wanted to do. When i was 10 i moved to NY so there was no where to learn. Now im kind of out of shape and i don’t know much. so if you could give me some pointers on getting in shape specifically for surfing like key areas. im working on the general stuff like cardio and crunches and things like that. and also where to find out etiquette and where to learn that would be great.
Well you definetly have a good mind set. You can always make a drive down to a NJ beach to try surfing so you dont exactly have to wait the whole 2 years until you go to California.
Since you can not surf yet, you should work on exercises like push ups, pull ups, running, cycling, and swimming. Especially swimming. This is one very important skill. Another good thing to do is to get an indo board. They will greatly improve your balance, so when you go out to surf, it wont be as hard to balance your first time. Beginners and pros use indo boards, and they are fun.
Make sure you are at home with the ocean before you surf. To give you an idea what I mean, be comfortable with rips, under tows, reefs, rocks, strong currents, marine life, and much more. If you have never been in the ocean before, practice ocean swimming for at least a few months if not a few years before you surf. Trust me, this is VERY important.
When you do go to surf, make sure you take some lessons. They will teach you everything you need to know to start surfing fast and safe. They do teach you ettiquette too. They help you learn how to surf faster and better than learning on your own.
After you have taken a few lessons and think you want to continue surfing, rent a board from a shop a few times. Make sure you really like surfing. Then go to a surf shop and have the guys there help you pick out a board. They will help you a lot. Always go to the surf shop when getting a board. Never go online and avoid pop out boards too. They teach you ettiquette with surf lessons, but here is an idea of what they will teach you.
