Are you sure that you and your partner do not communicate, you may have tried many ways to improve your communications with others, with poor results. You may think that telling him over and over will do. You may believe that raising your voice to make him listen. Everything which results in a match that ends in shouting in pain and suffering and silence, or worse.
You are, in fact, communicate. It does not work as you wish. Here is a list of ten ways to improve your interactions with your partner to increase your chances of a fruitful dialogue with each other.
Try them and be patient with yourself as you begin this journey. Remember, Michael Jordan did not become a professional basketball player one day. It took years of work. This is relationships. You learn and work everyday to become the people you want to be together. Enjoy the journey. It's worth it!
1. Ask them to schedule a time to speak.
Wait for an answer and I appreciate your partner agree on a date.
2. Set a time limit.
This should not be more than an hour, and preferably 15-20 minutes. If your partner is aware that you have the honor of his / her time, she will be more willing to do it again (and maybe longer next time).
3. Stick a topic for each conversation.
It's easier to do if you set a time limit and stick to it. Otherwise, you risk overwhelming your partner. If you want to talk about another subject, ask your partner if all goes well. Otherwise, ask the Schedule another time to talk.
4. Timing is everything:
Choose a time when you are both well rested and calm. It is cons-productive to attract your partner from he walks in the door or when she is tired.
5. Using the language intensive.
These are phrases like:
"I would _____________."
"I do not ____________."
"I prefer ___________."
"I feel uncomfortable ___________."
6. Ask what you want instead of the application.
Ask questions like:
"How would you feel about __________?"
"What do you ___________?"
"Would you be comfortable with __________?"
"Do you ____________?"
7. Accepting "no" as a valid answer.
Your partner has the right to disagree and say no. When you choose to talk with a "no", you say that this is not OK for your partner to disagree with you or say not.
8. Ask what you want, not what you do not want.
This may seem confusing, but if you ask that (do not ask) your partner to change behavior, to express it in terms of what you want to happen:
"I want to clean more. I would like to see more
___________. What do you do? "
9. Respect yourself and your partner.
Beware of statements that begin "you". Unless the words "are the most wonderful person in the world", followed by "you" statements are often blame, labeling, critical statements.
10. Express your gratitude for what you love about your partner does.
Appreciation is the glue of relationships. Your partner will be easier to listen when you give large doses of assessment on a regular basis. Caution: this does work if you only use the assessment when you try to do something ("I love how you wash the dishes so well. Oh, look, there is a sink full now. )
Remember, these are guidelines to help improve your communication skills. They can seem stiff and artificial. Keep them try and you will develop your own style better than you do with people you love most!
