Wireless laser mouse keeps freezing?

My boyfriend has a mouse similar to but not quite the same as this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-MX1000-Laser-Cordless-Mouse/dp/B0002UM0JW/ref=sr_1_1/002-4502355-1184851?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1182970170&sr=1-1

It’s a Logitech wireless laser mouse. Recently it has been freezing and sometimes disappearing. It only happens on my user account on his computer…on his account he says he doesn’t have problems.

He uses a program I think called Synergy that allows it to move between two monitors hooked up to two different computers. So one mouse, two computers.

One of the computers is Linux (this one, the main one) and the other is an old Windows computer.

He has had it for less than a year. We can’t tell if it is the physical mouse or the computer that is having the problem. He thinks it might be wireless interference of some kind.

He doesn’t have a mouse pad. It rests on the keyboard shelf, which is metal.

Any suggestions? I hope it’s not broken!

We had a laser mouse similar to the one in the picture and my dad had to make a special mousepad for it (I recommend getting a mousepad for those because without one ours skipped and did the same thing yours did)
Also cleaning it with an Air Duster helped us,
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=320319&pfp=cat1 (Our Air Duster was similar to that)
Clean the underside of the mouse with that to get dust and stuff out of the way (like in our mouse there’s a hole and we clean inside that)
Someone’s suggested alcohol to me too but I’ve never tried it.

There’s a paragraph on this site (Your wireless pointer doesn’t work continuously if at all) That pinpoints some problems that you might have.
Like battery, how the metal could “block, weaken, or scramble the signal”
