Hole Drill
How Far from the center should you drill the hole?
You are given a wooden rod 62 cm long and asked to drill a small diameter hole in it so that when pivoted about the the hole the period of the pendulum will be a minimum. How far from the center should you drill the hole?
The radius of gyration of the rod about centre of gravity
= 0.62/[2*sq rt(3)] = 0.18. The hole must be drilled at 18 cm from the center.
