Saving energy and money by changing the temperature of water heaters
Variation of water heater can actually be used to save energy. The water heaters are known to be the devices that consume the most energy in your house, and you can spend up to $ 400 in fees per year electric only by using hot water alone!
There are many ways for you to implement energy and therefore reduce the amount of your electricity bill. Among them, purchase a water heater timer or insulating materials. If you're not ready to dip into your pockets, it is also an easy way to reduce your energy water heater. Just change the temperature of hot water.
How it works?
By simply lowering thermostat setting of hot water, you can save critical amounts of energy. For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature reduction water, you can save up to 5% of energy.
Did you know?
Some manufacturers calibrate the water heater thermostat to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, even when the average household requires only water heater temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If lower your temperature setting of 20 degrees Fahrenheit, you can save up to 10% of energy. Using 140 degrees Fahrenheit as your set temperature may also pose some serious risks and dangers, such as burns.
Lowering the temperature of your water at 120 degrees Fahrenheit may also delay the process of corrosion and mineral buildup in water heater and pipes. This helps make your water heater last longer and operate at peak efficiency.
How do I use the thermostat?
You can read instructions in the manuals of your water heater on how the thermostat is operating. Usually, the thermostat for a water heater is gas storage located near the bottom of the tank gas valve. For electric water heater if the thermostat is located behind the screw on panels or plates. Remember, before the opening of the hatches, make sure to cut electricity to the heater. This is to prevent you from getting electrocuted. A electric water heater may also have two thermostats – one for the upper and heating.
After locating the thermostat and adapt to a lower temperature of the water, take note of the starting temperature and set temperature display on the thermostat dial. This will be your future reference. Then proceed to check the water temperature at the faucet farthest the water heater if the temperature has decreased according to your specifications. Most sundials are inaccurate thermostat so that you might need to perform several adjustments before finally getting the right temperature.
Miscellaneous Tips for using your water heater
If you plan to be away from home for several days, set the thermostat to lowest setting or turn off your water heater. You can disable it by turning off the disconnect breaker.
