15 Amp portable heater blew surge protector?
I have a 6 outlet surge protected plugged into outlet in my garage. I just got a 15 amp portable ceramic heater. The heater will work for about 10 mins, then the surge protector goes into protection mode. What gives? I only have a little radio also plugged into that outlet
I meant 1500watt, not 15 amps
First off I don’t understand why you would plug an electric heater into a surge protector, they are designed to protect electronic equipment, tv’s, dvd players computers and the like. If you plug the heater directly into the wall outlet you shouldn’t have any problems with anything tripping the breakers in your electrical panel. If you’re plugging your heater into the surge proctor for the lack of outlets then you’ll continue overloading the surge protector. As was stated by the other poster, your proctector is likely only rated for 15 amps to begin with. I don’t recommend using extention cords for the heater either unless it is rated for 20 amps and made with 12 guage wire.
