Bleach on my hardwood floor, other ideas to replace the floors?
We just bought a house and we whitewashed walls because of very bad nicotine stains. The bleach poured on the hardwood floor, we wiped, but still bleached. We plan floor finishing anyway, but not replace them. I was told that the spots would not take a bleached spot. Is this true? If yes is what I can do otherwise than to replace the hardwood? We're on a tight budget.
Your real problem will be equivalent to the area that has been bleached lighter with the rest of the wood floor. Bleach is a chemical very thin and applied to wood, can penetrate deep enough into the woods because of the capillary pore wood. First, I tape the entire surface with a sander floor. Be careful though, because if you use a heavy grain Sanders with a little weight can be sanded quickly. Go slowly so as not to produce high valleys or hollows in the ground (it will be very visible when finished and waxed). Having stripped the soil, you will re-stain. Since the plates exposed to the bleach will probably be much lighter, you have to apply additional layers to these regions, Work carfeully mix with darker areas. I would even try using a brush or feather to blend into the area depends on the area Daker exposed to the bleach). Do not put it on thick, or you'll have to wipe with a rag (running light) or wait forever To dry. Once you've matched the color of your best, you're ready to apply a sealer. I recommend a polyurethane finish, since thy're fairly resistant and durable. Then, if you want, you can follow up with a good floor wax. Good luck
