what grit sandpaper is best for prepping a wood table for painting?
I have a kitchen table that I want to paint because I am moving and I don’t have enough $$ to buy new so I fig. I’d make other table “look” new buy painting it. If you have any tips and advice I would appreciate it. But I know you must sand first so again what grit is best I am hand sanding it?
First clean your tables thoroughly with TSP solution (or another good cleanser) and rinse and let completely dry.
To sand I would use a 180 grit sandpaper which is a medium grit. But you can go with 120 or coarser if you have a lot of removing to do, then move up to 180 and then even 220 for a smooth finish. But since you are just painting them, you probably just want to rough up the surface for the paint to adhere to.
After removing all the sanding dust particles, prime the table with a good primer. Then use 2-3 coats of paint. Finish off with a top of of polyurethane if you like. Remember that there are oil-based and water-based paints (latex) choices out there so use the appropriate primer and finish.
