Wood Corbel
Corbels are functional as well as decorative architectural features that have been in use for hundreds of years. In a home, it perform as weight-bearing brackets or as ornamental decorations.
The name of the bracket is derived from the French word for crow, due to the beak-like shape. The right angled support feature, when carved from wood, adds beauty to a room while reflecting an existing theme or introducing a new one. Alder, oak, maple, cherry, pine, or any other wood corbel can echo furniture or architectural elements of a room, adding interest and a focal point.
It make timeless brackets for bookshelves and can be eye catching bookends when placed on the back edge rather than mounted on a surface. Carved wood corbels secured in opposing corners of a framed entry way give a timeless ambiance. One corbel fastened to a wall could serve as a platform for a vase or plant, and by adding a spotlight, would transform an otherwise uninspired room. Common designs may be categorized as Shaker, Contemporary, or Traditional, while other grape and leaf patterns hearken back to ancient Greece and Rome. Choosing the stain or paint to apply to it is another opportunity for artistic expression.
Try a weekend project of fastening one or two wood corbels to the wall of a business waiting room. It can convey a tone of dignity and taste, while suggesting permanence. In any living or working environment, a simple addition of carved brackets will enhance style.
