Foot Bath
Hi, I am building a foot bath for my cattle and want to use copper sulfate to treat.?
How should i dispose of the copper sulfate when cleaning the bath? I dont want to just let run off into the ground if it is toxic. Thank you.
I raise meat goats. I began to have a huge problem with hoof rot in my goats hooves, when I moved the herd from the high mountain desert of Idaho, to the damp Pacific Northwest of Washington.
I too am using copper sulfate to treat my goats hooves. Goats are small compared to cattle though. I run then through my squeeze table, and treat the individual goat, not the entire herd.
Hoof problems such as rot, and hairy wart ARE something which can be bred out of the herd. When I started with the goats 11 years ago, I didn’t realize how important good hoof health was. I’m paying for it now, and breeding problem hooves out of my herd.
I have goats which do not get hoof problems under any circumstances. They are completely resistant to the bacteria which cause hoof problems. My entire flock of sheep are also completely resistant.
I suggest you use a bull that is also completely resistant to hoof problems for your future generations. In the long run it will save you time, and money, and you will have better/faster weight gains and/or better lactation.
Copper sulfate is toxic to the roots of plants. That means if your cattle walk through the bath, and then out to pasture, over the years it will indeed build up along their paths, and leave vegetation free zones, which of course lead to soil erosion.
Dairy farmers usually empty the copper sulfate foot bath into their manure lagoon. Some copper sulfate spread onto pastures is actually good for them. Plants need the trace minerals too. Problem is over the years the copper sulfate is building up to toxic levels for the plants, not to mention it’s simply awful for fish streams when it runs off.
You don’t say how many cattle you have, or how often you need to treat for hoof problems. If you are small, consider spreading the copper sulfate water in corrals you want to be weed free.
If you have a septic system, run it through your own septic system to keep it root free. Copper sulfate is what septic companies put down septic systems and charge a LOT for that service.
You can also spread it on gravel driveways to help keep them weed free.
Remember though, every time you spread it, it’s going to leach out when it rains, and over the years it will build up to toxic levels.
So this only works if you are small. If you have a lot of cattle, or will be treating nearly constantly, I suggest you contact your local county Ag Extension office and see what their recommendations are for disposal of the copper sulfate.
