can i feed my dwarf hamster bits of oranges?
my hamster is a russian dwarf hamster, hehehe his name is ozzy, but he tends to stick towards only eating the sunflower seeds that come in his hamster food and wont eat anything else! im trying to show him a bit of a variety of food… can i feed him bits of oranges and other stuff like that?
People have already answered about oranges, but I would like to add that it is best to avoid sugar too with Russian dwarfs. They are prone to Diabetes so to be safe people don’t feed them fruit (contains natural sugars) or pet shop treats that are made with sugar in the ingredients. Instead you can give them bits of vegetables such as: broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, salad leaves [but not iceburg lettuce, it's too watery], beans [but not raw kidney beans]… basically anything that is safe for you to eat and isn’t in the same family as the onion (no onions, garlic or leeks). Feeding small amounts every couple of days is good for them.
But, it is best to try and make them eat more of their hamster food. Hamsters like to pick out their favourite bits (the most fattening, like sunflower seeds) and leave the rest. To get a balanced diet they should eat more. To make them, try not to fill the bowl up again until they have eaten most of it – even if they beg you for more. Hamsters are like children, if they could they would only eat junk food!
