Electric Airless
Centrifugal or Rotary Atomizers
This technology uses centrifugal force to create atomization. They are most commonly used for automatic coating applications and normally in combination with an electrostatic charge. The coating is slung off the edges of a disk or a bell that is rotating at very high speeds. To aide in the atomization process, the edges of the disk or bell may be serrated. As the coating leaves the rotating disk or bell it enters an electrostatic field that atomizes the coating even further.
As the use of this atomization technology is very limited in manual applications, we will refrain from further discussion at this time and will discuss it in more detail in a future article.
Electrostatic Atomization Technology
Electrostatic guns create a negatively charged field from the gun to a positively grounded part. The paint particles pass through the field where they become charged. These negatively charged particles are then attracted to the positively grounded part. This reduces over spray as the paint particles are pulled back to the grounded part and the over spray that would normally pass the part, is pulled to the back and the sides of the part. The electrostatic field also helps to atomize the coatings as the negatively charged molecules of the paint are repelled from each other.
Electrostatic guns are available in almost all of the previously mention atomization technologies so we will not discuss them in detail in this article. All electrostatic guns are considered compliant technology. As there are many issues concerning electrostatic technologies that should be considered before purchasing, we will need to address these along with rotary atomizers in another article in the near future.
There are new technologies that are working their way into the industrial finishing industry that are noteworthy. Some spray gun manufacturers have already begun introducing air spray guns that claim to be as efficient as HVLP but use air pressures higher than 10 psi. Others are introducing hybrid guns that combine air spray with an airless tip, like Air-Assisted Airless, but with fluid pressures that are considered low pressure.
As to whether or not these technologies catch on, only time and experience will tell. Much will depend on the industries they serve, the coatings they need to spray, acceptance by state environmental agencies and most of all, the finishers that need to use them. We will try to keep you updated on these new technologies as they prove themselves in the field.
