How to get video off my dvr receiver to my computer?
I have a dirctv dvr receiver with tivo. how do I get the video off it onto my computer?
There is a way to UPGRADE your DirecTV Tivo so that you can network it to your homes wired/wireless router. Then you will be able to download the shows over the network to your PC for editing and burning the shows/movies to DVD. I will give more info about this down a paragraph of two.
The problem with downloading the shows/movies from your unit now is that the USB ports are NOT acitve without the upgrade I hinted at above. Secondly the Shows/Movies you have saved on your DirecTivo are in an Encrypted format. So EVEN once you upgrade the Hard drive and software you will NOT be able to download shows that you already have on it as described above. there is a way to transfer the shows/movies in a REAL time recording though.
To download the movies/shows you have now you either need a TV Tuner Capture Card for your PC or a DVD Recorder. I prefer the TV Tuner Capture card method (Which is how I downloaded all my shows/movies form my DirecTivo before I upgraded it with networking). Once you install a PCI (For a Desktop PC) or a PCMCIA (For Laptop) into the PC you can then run either Coaxial cable, S-Video and RCA Audio Cables, or RCA Audio Video cables from the DirecTivo to the Capture card. Then you can either push play or save to VCR on the DirecTivo and Record on the TV Tuner Capture cards software. This will record your shows to your PC’s hard drive in a mpeg format which can then be edited and then burned to DVD.
Now for the GOOD stuff, If you want to upgrade your DirecTivo (Networking cannot be done on the DirecTV Tivo R10, it can ONLY be Upgraded to a larger hard drive size of 400GB or so compared to its stock 80GBs). For ALL other DirecTV Tivo’s you can use InstantCake 6.2a and PTVnet to UPGRADE to a larger hard drive and ENABLE the USB ports on the DirecTivo. Once the USB ports are Enabled you can then set up the DirecTV Tivo or DirecTV Tivo’s (If you have multiple) to your homes wired/wireless network. Here is what I have put together over the years to help me and others when it comes to upgrading the DirecTivo’s.
First check out site #1 it has forums that explain how to hack your DirecTV Tivo’s so that you have Networking abilities on your DirecTV Tivo which allow MRV (multiroom Viewing if you have more than one DirecTV Tivo), HMO (Home media Option) which allows you to have a PC connected to your home network that can be used as a server for your MP3′s and Pictures to be shown on your DirecTV Tivo. Once you hack the unit/s (HAS TO BE A SERIES 1 OR SERIES 2 DirecTV Tivo) you can apply some programs so that you can download the shows/movies from the decrypted programs stored on your DirecTV Tivo onto a PC for viewing/Burning onto a DVD. I have used these site below to aid me in Hacking 6 DirecTV Tivos (Qty2-Hughes SD-DVR40, Qty 1-Hughes HDVR2,Qty 2-Phillips DSR704). I have HMO, MRV, can access over the internet with gotomydvr.com, can download shows/movies from all the units.
Site #2 is where you purchase the software necessary to upgrade the DirecTV Tivo, look for either their kits or if you want to upgrade yourself look at InstantCake 6.2a, PTVnet, and the Slicer. (InstantCake is the operating system/ software displays you see on the screen, PTVnet is the software to boot the ISO disk you download onto your PC when you connect a NEW harddrive and it enables the USB ports and allows networking, The Slicer lets you get/receive software updates from DirecTV without losing all your previous hacks upon software upgrades.)
#3 is a forum to get the other necessary software patches to allow you to decrypt the DirecTV signal before it is stored onto the DirecTV Tivos harddrive. And a patch to allow downloads of the shows/movies from the DirecTV Tivo. (Superpatch-62a, Tytool 10R4, and others)
