Drive Deep
Mud driving is a lot of fun, but it’s easy enough to get stuck or to damage your car so you want to do it the right way the first time! It is suggested that you let your tires down to 15 – 22 PSI when going through mud, and to check the depth of the puddle you are going through. There is nothing worse than getting halfway to see mud go over the bonnet and to hear your vehicle die! If you have a snorkel you should be able to go just over bonnet height if you spray the electrics with silicon, but if you don’t have a snorkel anything over wheel height can be dangerous.
The key to mud is momentum, but not so much that you damage your vehicle. If you have a hand idle, this can be very handy. Select a gear which has plenty of torque and powerful enough to get you through. The last thing that you want to be doing is changing gears in the mud, as it will get all over the clutch. I would suggest 3rd gear in Low Range or 2nd Gear in high range depending on the situation. If the puddle isn’t deep I often try just idling through the section slowly, but if there is any chance of water getting in the vehicle I tend to go a bit quicker.
If the water is deep hit the water carefully creating a bow wave, and follow it through. Don’t go so fast that water sprays everywhere, or you will swamp your engine bay and get stuck in the middle of the water. If you are struggling in mud a good technique is to apply the hand break a little bit (if you don’t have lockers) and to turn the front wheels back and forth. The more you spin the wheels the more your tires will clear out, but you wreck the track too. A good set of Mud Terrain Tires will help you out considerably.
