Is it better to drill into a tree rather than encircle it to hang something?
If I need to hang something heavy from a living tree, is it really better to drill a bolt into the tree (as I have been told) rather than to encircle it?
Encircling the tree will eventually cut off the flow of food and water. The layer immediately below the bark is the source of all new growth for the tree. Drilling does damage in one spot. Encircling it has the same effect as “girdling” it. If you wanted to kill a tree, strip off a band of bark about 2 inches wide encircling the trunk…this is called girdling. Sometimes this is done to provide standing dead wood, which helps to increase species diversity in a forest. (More bugs, birds, critters)
A note of caution, however. Should the tree ever be cut down, be sure to either remove the bolt or at least point it out to the person cutting it down. To hit a bolt with a chainsaw can be deadly for the person running the chainsaw.
