Door Window
A Registered Sex Offender had an argument with his girl friend, He got drunk, drove to a residential neighborhood and attempted to enter a home. When he failed to get into the first house he went next door and did get in. This week he was sentenced to 40 years in jail for raping a 59 year old woman there. The news article did say he had a backpack with duct tape and rope in it so it would appear he was looking for trouble. The report did say the lady woke up with his hand over her mouth but did not say how he got in.
How could he not get in one house and did not get into the one next door?
1. Maybe the Door or Window was not Locked.
It might have been a hot night that June and the owner left the Living Room Window Open to let some air into the home. The neighbors home had doors and windows locked.
2. The door was locked but he used a Lock pick or a Lock Bumper Key to open the lock.
A Bumper Key is the same make as the door lock and is tapped into the lock to force the tumbler to open the lock. He used a pry bar and forced the door when the locks or the door jamb was not strong enough for the pressure..
3. He entered through the Patio Sliding Door.
He put a pry under the sliding glass patio door and lifted it out of the track. Using the pry bar he simple overcame the simple lock these type of patio door have and rolled it open.
4. He used that bar or small hammer to poke a hole in a window,
He could have reached through and opened the lock.. He would have wrapped it with a cloth to muffle the sound and reached in and unlocked it.
How could the owner have overcome those 4 ways he might have entered?
1. Lock the Entry Doors, including the one from the garage, and all windows.
A lazy crook will just keep checking homes until he find that easy entry of an unlocked door or window. In this case he found one next door.
2. Leave the outside light on all night. Use a portable Door Brace.
Crooks hate noise and lights. There are locks available that can not be bumper keyed. A door brace will keep the door from being opened. It braces from the door knob down to the floor and keeps the door from being opened even if it is unlocked.
3. A pin in the upper rail of the Patio Sliding Door will keep it from being raised and moved.
Simply drill a nail size hold through the upper rail right about the door and slip an 8 penny nail or pin in. the hole. To keep the door from sliding open that same door brace you used in the above paragraph works great to lay it in the bottom track and keep it from rolling open.
4. Make noise with alarms..
Remember that the intruders do not wish to make noise and wake the people inside or even the neighbors. A simple ten dollar alarm will slip between the door and the door jamb. When the door is opened the alarm drops out and sounds off. It is quite noisy. It will also work on the window in much the same way. Other inexpensive alarms work on noise of glass breaking. Others will sound off when they detect motion in the room.
So do a little planning ahead. Make it hard for the thief to enter your home. Chances are the Crooks are too lazy or too much of a hurry to overcome simple protection measures. The first house was a problem for the thug. The second house was not. Make yours one like the first one.
