Lab unaccredited Virginia chooses a new breath alcohol Test

On April 23, 2008 in Virginia began Ad INTOX EC / IR II as an approved device in accordance with the regulations alcohol breath test. Virginia has signed a contract with Intoximeter to buy 220 aircraft the same day.
Alka Lohmann is the head of the Virginia section of unlicensed alcohol. On May 5, 2008 Committee Scientific Advisory meeting, Ms. Lohmann has given a status report on EC / IR II. She noted that the 50 states of this tester is used in only four states outside of Virginia: West Virginia, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Tennessee. Ms. Lohmann has not explained why only 10% of states used EC / IR II. She said that the new tester offered better communication skills, increased laboratory and troubleshooting as the ability to use a dry gas.
Ms. Lohmann asked about the types of reports can be requested on the device. She said that the same reports currently available will be available for the new machine.
In analytical chemistry, the analysis of a substance must be corroborated by an independent review and analysis of alternatives. Agreement between the two different methods of analysis for reliable results.
On behalf of the EC / IR II implies that the machine will measure the alcohol concentration of matter in two ways: EC electrochemical means fuel cells or IR means infrared. By this method, the device guarantees the reliability of its results by using different tests. This internal corroboration would give the EC / IR II a distinct advantage of reliability devices using a single technology.
Unfortunately, Intoximeter was unable to coordinate different methods of analysis. Because of this failure, the instrument does not use two independent methods for measuring alcohol concentration. Instead, the EC / IR II uses only the fuel cell to measure alcohol and determine the alcohol content in blood. Infrared is used to monitor the quality and breath sample to detect alcohol in the mouth.
The fuel cell component is not capable detect mouth alcohol. The fuel cell simply reports the total concentration of alcohol present with the registration of the presence of alcohol in the mouth.
Over time, fuel cells change in sensitivity and should be checked regularly to maintain accuracy. IR detectors do not require calibration few weeks. As the microstructure of the electrodes changes the temporal basic sensor drift. This shift takes the EC Sych with the IR.
Calibrating the device every few weeks would be very demanding and time consuming. Some States have solved this problem by disabling the IR entirely. Once the IR detector is disabled, the device lacks the ability to detect mouth alcohol.
