Dead bolt replacement question, please help.?
I’m replacing the dead bolt lock on my front door. The hole in the door is to small to accept the new dead bolt. The hole in the door looks to be about 1 7/8 diameter, but it needs to be 2 1/8 . My question is how do I open up the hole to a larger needed diameter, with out having anything to follow?In other words my hole saw has a 1/4 inch drill bit in the middle to be used as a pilot. Well what would be the area used for a pilot hole is wiped out with the 1 7/8 hole. I tried to use the new hole saw free hand, but that isn’t working at all.
Place a small pc. of 1/2″ plywood over both sides of the door covering the old hole. Use clamps or tack them on with 4d finish nails out of the path of the hole saw.
Now mark your new hole center to line up with the center of the edge hole.
Take your 2-1/8″ hole saw and start throught one side – go 1/2 way, now drill through the other side to finish.
Remove blocks and install the new deadbolt.
You can rent a jig but this is so simple and costs $0.
Make sure you clean plugs out of the hole saw once you go through the layer of plywood.
