Chinese Side Optimistic About Copper Negotiation With Bhp Billitons
Chinese side optimistic about copper negotiation with BHP Billitons
The second round of the yearly negotiation on copper smelting and processing fees between Chinese side and foreign copper ore supplier BHP Billitons has finished, with a wide gap between the two sides in prices offered at the talks.
The negotiation is known as the second largest one in bulk commodities field only after the talks on iron ore supply.
According to authoritative sources taking part in the negotiation, the two sides made try offers of prices. BHP offered a price of 52.5 US dollars per ton, while CSPT (China Smeltery Purchase Team) gave a price of 82.5 US dollars per ton and requested resumption of the terms of price sharing, which serve as a backup way for profit making when the processing fees is low.
As recent copper concentrate trading goes sluggish but inventories increase, copper-processing fee on the spot market has increased from 48 US dollars/ton at early November to the recent 99 US dollars/ton.
The Chinese side is optimistic about the negotiation. The country’s import of copper concentrate is expected to be 5.2 million tons in 2008, and further up to six million tons next year. said a CSPT source.
CSPT expects an increase of 760,000 tons in smelting capacity throughout the world, and an output rise of 800,000 tons by copper mine suppliers, which are almost balanced.In addition, BHP forecasts a shortage of 577,000 tons in copper concentrate supply, while the Chinese(cnmining) side doubted it might be much less.
An international institution predicts the shortage to be 100,000 tons.
The negotiation is still under way.
