Control System
Few people know exactly what is Control Systems Engineering. It is a subset of Control Engineering, which includes any kind of engineering where the control is concerned. Simply speaking, have lots of inputs, perform calculations and setting out to provoke the desired response is control system – which is what engineering is all about control. Control systems engineering, in its most common form, involves control of electric machines or supplied or equipment with analog and digital signals some sort of control device. It includes, but is not limited to embedded controllers, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or Remote Terminal Units (RTU). The latter is used when Several remote sites, with a central monitoring Installation (CMF).
A complete control system usually consists of the equipment itself, the electronic control layer as described above and a software package that is on a computer or other, which allows humans interact with the hardware. This is generally considered a man-machine interface (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA). These systems are typically buttons, set points and digital screens that allow the operator to see exactly what is happening with equipment – including defects, status, flow, pressure, levels and so on. This allows faster fault finding, diagnostics and information General on the whole plant in one place.
So now that you know exactly what a control system is, that being an engineering control system include? Well, very simply, it is the design of the two layers mentioned above. Under the project, you are involved, it may include both or just one component. Often when you work in a team, you will be designated in one of the two layers. This means that you will work closely with other members of the team so that the software layer looks the correct places in memory of the control layer for information to display.
For both layers, there are tons of different providers and suppliers, all using different systems to communicate and control. Fortunately, there are very few standards in place which means that there significant similarities between the manufacturers. For this reason, the learning curve between the products is generally not so difficult, provided you know at least the first well. There are still differences, however, which means that as long as control systems engineer you need to be able to learn and adapt to different situations.
Being an engineer control systems is a choice Career difficult, but if you're in that kind of thing can be very rewarding. Not to mention that all forms of engineering pays very well! It allows also a bit of travel and travel as clients are often in remote locations such as mining, electricity and water distribution. With a diploma in electronics, control systems or mechatronics engineering is an obvious choice. Good luck with either option you choose.
