The Basics of Heat Exchange
What are Heat Exchangers?
Heat exchangers are devices built to allow the transfer of heat from one material, usually liquid or gas, to another material without having the materials come in contact or mix with each other. There are both parallel flow and counter flow models. In parallel flow heat exchangers, the materials enter the device at the same end. In counter flow heat exchangers, the materials enter at opposite ends of the device.
Where are Heat Exchangers Used?
The most common uses for heat exchangers are with space heaters, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Heat exchanging devices are built into these products so that they can heat or cool an area when needed. Other uses include power plants, chemical plants, natural gas processing, and sewage treatments.
What are the Common Types of Heat Exchangers?
The two most common types include Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers and Plate Heat Exchangers.
Shell and Tube uses an intertwined number of tubes for the liquids or gases to travel through. The liquid that needs to be heated or cooled travels through one tube and the liquid that will do the heating or cooling runs over the tube absorbing or exuding heat.
Plate Heat consists of multiple thin plates, slightly separated from each other. The plates have passageways for the fluids to travel through and exchange heat.
What are Heat Exchangers made out of?
Heat exchangers often need to withstand extreme temperatures. For this reason, there are many materials developed specifically for the purpose of heat exchange. Common materials to make heat exchange tubing include PTFE (Poly tetra-fluoro ethylene), FEP (Fluorinated ethylene propylene), and PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy).
