Why can’t I use a CFL light bulb on a dimmer or an electronic timer?
Standard light bulbs are simply resistive elements and they respond predictably when the input voltage is modified or modulated.
CFL’s on the other hand, are just that…compact fluorescent lights with the equivalent of a ballast, switching circuitry, etc. When you lower the input voltage (as a dimmer would) they struggle to maintain operating voltages for the lamp itself. Once the input voltage drops below a certain level they simply fail to maintain the operating voltage and they switch off.
