Anyone know how to antique brass by hand?
Like brass wire or pendants, so that they look tarnished and old? And so that they permanently stay that way.
Since you want it permanent, I recommend some sort of electroplating process–these are tricky, and not for the faint of heart. However, you can achieve a slight change in color using liver of sulfur. Typically used to create a dark brown to black color on copper, and a range of colors on silver (as well as black), it usually turns bronze (and presumably brass) a slightly darker golden color. Nothing drastic, but it does age the piece. however, even with the use of fixatives, it will eventually wear off and need to be reapplied. You can buy a half pound can at www.contenti.com for about $13. Throw a smallish piece in with enough warm water to cover your piece, and dunk it on in there. Not permanent, but cheaper and easier than electroplating.
