What is better, to use central air heater or a wood stove,for air quality and electric bill?
I live in Sacramento,north cal. duplex with 4 rooms
You are asking if breathing polluted air with soot is better or worse than breathing polluted air without soot. The easy answer would be that using a wood stove increases your chances of breathing soot. Seals or no seals, you will encounter soot as no wood stove is 100% sealed. The very important factor that may be overlooked here is that your indoor air is more polluted than outdoor air. The reason for that is the air is not being changed/refreshed. A good air purifier will draw your indoor air through its filters and past an ultra-violet light to clean out the particles and bacteria, then return it back into the room. Humidity is also a factor in indoor air quality. You will want to keep your home at about 40-50%. I would recommend the stand-alone steam units from Home Depot. They are cheap and easy to use. Installing a humidifier on your furnace only introduces humidity into your duct-work and has never been a good idea. This makes your ducts a perfect breeding ground for mold. I hope this helps.
